You won! But there's a catch | News
HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – An international money scam is regaining its popularity in Horry County, and police hope you can avoid becoming a victim.
Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for the Horry County Police Department, says victims of this scam receive a mailed letter claiming they had won the lottery in the United Kingdom.
The letter also includes a check for $4,990, intended to pay for the taxes on your winnings. Instructions tell you to cash that check and use the cash to send a Moneygram to cover those taxes to an overseas account.
If the story were true, the money you are entitled to would be mailed to you after taxes were paid.
Here's the catch: the original check bounces. As the victim of this scam, you and your bank are scammed out of thousands, and that promised lottery reward never comes.
HCPD warns that if you receive a letter similar to the described, do not cash the check. Kegler adds that the International Claim Department has identified them as scammers of an unknown origin and location.
If you believe you have become a victim of this or any other scam, you are urged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
